Carl suffers from deep-rooted fears that were instilled by his mother and the church in which she raised him.
His fears have driven him to cheat on his wife. He impregnates a girl, who aborts the fetus and thus brings all of Carl’s fears to full fruition.
Carl is terrified by what may be the ultimate consequences of his actions.
His psychiatrist and doctors offer a chance for him to release his fears and avoid the consequences if he chooses to do so.
After befriending a stranger, Carl finds what he thinks is a loophole to his dilemma and starts down a dark path as he follows the advice of the stranger to resolve the conflicts of anxiety vs reality that are embedded in the fears of his psyche.
